St. Cloud, MN : VA Medical Center
This project’s main purpose was to relocate, upgrade, and upsize the generators that were in Buildings 97, 99, and 103, which provides emergency power to patient and critical care buildings on the St. Cloud VA medical campus. The old generators ran on 120/208 volts, which was inadequate for the buildings’ 480-volt mechanical systems. The new generators deliver 277/480 volts, with the ability to adequately power the buildings’ mechanical systems with step down transformers to power the existing 120/208- volt systems. Work included general construction, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and architectural work. The scope of this project also included the construction of a new, 1,045 SF generator building located on the east side of the campus, with a revised distribution of the generators that were removed. After the generators were relocated to one location in the new building, the existing generator buildings at Buildings 97, 99, and 103 were safely demolished. This project has also included phasing and off-hours work due to the active nature of the medical campus. Infection Control has been a point of emphasis for this project to protect the patients and staff during the ongoing construction.
